The Anomalies
'Margarita'
Released on 1 June 2009 on Beyond Music
Firstly, no, it’s not about a cocktail, it’s about a rather exotically named angry girlfriend and, yes, it’s another strong release from Hereford hip hop/ rock crossover The Anomalies. A blast of angry sirens open the track, launching the song into a bass heavy, ska infused belter which surely would provide a breather for listeners Radio Akon (….sorry I mean Radio One) without moving too far away from the station’s target audience. If there’s something the act need (and it’s not a good record – they’ve already created a great one) it’s exposure and support from the institutions that bands rely on to give them their ‘break.’ With the Head of Music position at radio stations becoming less and less vital, it seems that someone is twisting the hypothetical knackers of the nation`s media and not giving people a say in what they want to hear. We rely on these institutions to bring us the best of new British music. Is playing N-Dubz the best they can do?
Anyway, rant aside and back to the review. Even though `Margarita` is about how The Anomalies’ boys don’t make very good boyfriends, their gleefully sarcastic promises of ‘never again’ always bring them out on top and make them, like the track, hard to resist.
