The Horrors

'Primary Colours'

Released on 4 May 2009 on XL

Hats off to the Horrors. Instead of trying to perfect the garage punk stylings of their debut `Strange House` and possible injecting some tunes into the proceedings, it looks like they`ve decided to put down their copy of Nuggets and picked up Can`s `Monster Movie` instead.

Dirty, analogue synths are now the order of the day and from the slow, throbbing, almost Pink Floyd sounding start of opener `Mirror Image` through to the, brilliant seven minute, electrodelic, epic `Sea Within A Sea`, layering sound over sound is the primary focus of the album with an assortment of interesting and different noises being brought to the fore.

This concentration on the music means that vocalist Farris Rotter`s role is now reduced to low, almost inaudible mumblings which become part of the whole soundscape, so although there`s very little in the line of memorable melodies on show the new vocal style does fit into the feel of the LP as a whole.

To paraphrase a popular `indie` radio one DJ ` "to make your second LP sound brilliant be sure to record a really shit debut", well I guess it`s better that way round than the other and if `Primary Colours` is anything to go by maybe more bands should find themselves by putting out half baked first albums (see also `Pablo Honey` by Radiohead).

Could be a contender for album of the year, now who would have thought that a couple of years ago?

Three Decades sounds like 'Closer'-period Joy Division sung by David Gedge. Oh, it's good, oh it's good!
