Josh Wink

'When A Banana Was Just A Banana'

Released on 2 February 2009 on Ovum

Only Josh Wink`s fourth full studio LP in a career that has seen the highs of his acid house resurrecting hit `Higher State of Consciousness` countered with the lows of the appalling remix set that followed a year later enjoys both a titular title and a grandiose groove.  Kicking off in style with the synthetic steel-drum gurgles and driven, speed-garage groove of `Airplane Electronique`, he immediately stamps his mark on your CD player - an indelible ink statement of intent that cannot be removed until the grooves run out on the second side some seventy five minutes later and a similar one to that made by 187 Lockdown last century.

Along the journey we hear the bare-bones progressive acid of `Counter Clock 319`, the slow-burning dub (with some particularly sharp and seemingly random sound samples) of `Minimum 23` and, by final track, `Stay Out All Night` the mix has returned full circle to the hedonism of track one.  Midway `Jus` Right` takes what has gone before, what is to come and combines them all into a autological mix of intelligent dance music...with additional bongo samples.

Presented as a mix where you literally can`t hear the joins, with Wink having been at the top of dance music for a good decade and a half it`s no wonder.  As with nearly all instrumental dance albums, there are times the interest wanes and it`s perhaps fifteen minutes too long for a casual sitting.  But, this remains an intense mixtape of Wink`s many different styles and he`s certainly carefully avoided any banana-skin slip-ups on this one.

Josh Wink makes some great club tunes. I LOVE 'How's your evening so far' and I am a huge fan of his Herehear album. This album is pretty sweet but not as eclectic.

Just FYI...The retail version is sold as a mix but the vinyl and digital version are broken up into tracks.

Wink had no control over the largely awful mixes of Higher State that came out.
