In July of 2008 I found myself at the Indietracks festival. In an effort to escape the scorching sun I made my way over to the small tin church to watch whatever was happening in there. This was a both a bad idea and a good idea; bad because a small tin church full of people in the midday sun is unbearably hot, good because I accidentally stumbled upon one of the sets of the weekend: A Classic Education.
Part Canadian, part Italian, the band has been going for just under two years. Much has happened since. Formed by Canadian singer and guitarist Jonathan Clancy and his Italian mates Luca Mazzieri and Paul Pieretto, the band is now a six piece with the addition of Giulia Mazza, Federico Oppi and Stefano Roveda.
A Classic Education has been invited to play or toured with Arcade Fire, Modest Mouse, Okkervil River, Fanfarlo… and once you’ve heard them you’ll easily see why. With their debut “First EP” (distrobuted by Rough Trade), a limited edition 12″ that documented the first year as a band, they have gathered praise and hype from some of the most respected music blogs and websites in the world.
The band have just signed a new deal with Lefse label and their new EP, Hey There Stranger, is out September 21st. We’re expecting very good things.
1. Gone To Sea
2. Terrible Day
3. What My Life Could Have Been
4. Devilish Coast Sway
5. I Lost Time
6. Toi
To give you a flavour of what to expect have a listen to the quite brilliant Stay Son from their debut EP.
