Ane Brun

'The Puzzle'

Released on 18 May 2009 on Determine

If you ever find yourself staggering across the frozen Norwegian tundra under the influence of some form of hallucinogen, then this would be your perfect soundtrack. Ane Brun is the woman responsible for this slice of Scandinavian weirdness, a girl youíre probably at least sub-consciously familiar with after her rather delicious cover of `True Colours` appeared on a recent advert for Sky HD.

This latest single evokes Kate Bush and Bjork, her distinctive and impressive warble framed by tinkling piano and haunting strings. The rapid-fire lyrics of the chorus are certainly a surprise, but this section is also oddly fitting in what is a highly original song. `The Puzzle` is a glacial beauty; steeped in intrigue and originality, but also strangely unsettling. Give this a few listens, and I guarantee itíll stay prowling around the back of your mind for days. Creepy, but ace.
