The Rhone Occupation do a nice line in psychedelic space fuzz and Radiohead-lite rock riffage, however one suspects that if they broke away from the debt that they so obviously owe them, they may yet produce something a little more original as they do. This is a free album, and one that they are giving away via their website as a five track zip, so one cannot be too sniffy.
`I Know I Did You Wrong` is a sprightly affair, containing as it does the aforementioned Radiohead influences. `Would It Kill You To Talk This Out` is however a little less forgivable as the Thom Yorke-isms become a little unbearable and the blatant `Paranoid Android` lifts leave you feeling this may be an undiscovered Radiohead out-take. `The Worst Of Me` is altogether more adrenalize, verging on the positively jaunty, however this too, is also let down by lazy lyricism.
The best of the bunch is `A Place`, a tranquil, melodic affair that that is more Flaming Lips than Radiohead and all the stronger for it. It ends with `Stop`, another quasi-psychedelic affair that reaches for the epic and may yet find itself in pole position on `Smallville`. This is a good record and a strong introduction to a band that, if they can, and do, choose to break away from chronic influence-itus, may yet deliver something far more substantial to the casual listener.
