Sadly neither a tribute to Jim Beattie`s post-Primal Scream alt.rock vehicle Spirea X nor Irish melody masters The Crimea, instead `Phoros` is the debut EP from Italian krautrockers (yeah, I know that doesn`t sound right) DJ Rocca and Jukka Reverberi who bring backgrounds in dance music and post rock respectively to this ornate, occasional table.
Four tracks based around different timescales indulge the listener in different ways. `December` is considered, shimmering FX-laden funk, `October` a peculiar meeting of plodding P-Funk and Tommorow`s World moogery while bonus track `A Year Later` places more emphasis on drums and percussion, simultaneously lifting the finest elements of dark hardcore and early trance to produce a truly fabulous battle weapon for any discerning DJ with a memory.
However, lead track `10PM`, a drowsy version of `I Feel Love` topped with heavenly piano) is both the clear standout on the EP and the only track afforded remixes. These come from Florian Meindl who increases the tempo with a slightly unbalanced but nonetheless enjoyable techno workout and Enzo Elia & Martin Pantino who, for all their current hype, manage little more than to recreate the sound of clumsy removal men moving a piano down an apparently infinite set of staircases.
`Phoros` is yet another fantastic release from the Hell Yeah label and, while the remixes are not quite up to scratch, there`s plenty to be excited about on this six tracker.
